Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage

Accidents are caused;they don't just happen. The reason may be easy to see:a shelf out of reach, a patch of ice on the misfortune—frustration, tiredness or just bad temper—that show what the accident really is, a sort of attack on oneself.

Road accidents, for example, happen frequently after a family quarrel, and we all know people who are accident-prone, so often at odds with themselves and the world that they seem to cause accidents for themselves and others.

By definition, an accident is something you can not predict or avoid, and the idea which used to be current, that the majority of road accidents are caused by a minority of criminally careless drivers, is not supported by insurance statistics. These show that most accidents involve ordinary motorists in a moments of carelessness or thoughtlessness.

It is not always clear, either, what sort of conditions make people more likely to have an accident. For instance, the law requires all factories to take safety precautions and most companies have safety committees to make sure the regulations are observed, but still, every day in Britain, some fifty thousand men and women are injured from work due to accidents. These accidents are largely the result of human error or misjudgment—noise and fatigue, boredom or worry are possible factors which contribute to this. Doctors who work in factories have found that those who drink too much, usually people who have a high anxiety level, run three times the normal risk of accidents at work.

  26. The passage suggests that________.

A.Accidents are usually caused by psychological factors.

B.Accidents mostly result from slippery roads.

C.Drinkers run three times the normal risk of accidents in factories.

D.About 50 000people lose their lives at work in Britain every day.

  答案:A

27.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a factor of accidents?

  A.Mood. B.Tiredness. C.Carelessness D.Weather

  答案:D

  28. The word “accidents-prone”(L.2 Para.2.means________.

A.likely to have accidents B.injured in accidents

C.possible to die in accidents D.responsible for road accidents

  答案:A

  29. What can we infer about the author opinion of accidents?

A.Safety precautions are of little use in accidents.

B.Many accidents can and should be avoided.

C.Factory accidents , unlike road accidents, are inevitable.

D.Most road accidents are caused by just a few careless drivers.

  答案:B

  30. The best title for the passage would be __________.

  A.Accidents and Anxiety

B.How to Deal with Accidents on Road and in Factories

  C.Human Factors in Accidents

D.How to Prevent Accidents on Road and in Factories

  答案:C
Is language, like food, a basic human need?Judging from the result of the violent experiment by a German King, Frederick II, in the 13th century, it may be. Hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue, he told the nurses to keep silent.

All the infants died before the first year. But clearly there was more than language deprivation here. What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering, in the first year of life especially, the capacity to survive is seriously affected.

Today no much violent deprivation exists as that by Frederick II. Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to the signals of the infant, whose brain is programmed to map up language rapidly. There are critical times, it seems, when children learn more readily. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring language skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again.

Linguists(語言學(xué)家.suggest that speech stages are reached in a fixed sequence and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ.

Recent evidence suggests that an infant is born with the capacity to speak. What is special about Man's brain compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of , say, a teddy-bear(玩具熊.with the sound pattern “teddy-bear”。

But speech has to be stimulated, and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child's babbling(牙牙學(xué)語., grasping, crying, smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals dulls the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child's non-verbal signals is essential to the growth and development language.

  31. FrederickII's experiment was violent because_________.

A.he wanted to prove children are born with ability to speak

B.he ignored the importance of mothering to the infant

C.he was unkind to the nurse

D.he wanted his nurses to say no mother tongue

  答案:B

  32. The reason some children are backward in speaking today that_________.

A.their mothers do not respond to their attempts to speak

B.their mothers are not intelligent enough to help them

C.they do not listen carefully to their mothers

D.their brains have to absorb too much language at once.

  答案:A

  33. By “critical times” in Paragraph 3 the author means__________.

A.difficult periods in the child's life

B.moments when the child becomes critical to its mother

C.important stages in the child's development

D.times when mothers often neglect their children

  答案:C

  34. Which of the following in NOT implied in the passage?

A.Ability to learn to speak a language is inborn in man

B.Children do not need to be encouraged to learn to speak

C.Early language starters are not necessarily highly intelligent

D.Most children learn their language in definite stages

  答案:B

A.the child will never be able to speak properly

B.the child will stop giving out signals

Americans who remember “the good old days” are not alone in complaining about the educational system in this country. Immigrants(移民. complain ,too. Lately a German friend was filled with anger when he learned that the mathematics test given to his son on his first day as a college freshman included multiplication and pision. Japanese businessmen in Los Angeles send their children to private schools staffed by teachers imported from Japan to learn mathematics at Japanese levels, generally considered at least a year more advanced than the level here.

But I wonder:If American education is so poor, why is it that this is still the country of innovation(創(chuàng)新.?

When I was 12 in Indonesia,I had to memorize the name of all the world's major cities, from Kabul to Karachi. At the same age,my son,who was brought up by a Californian, thought that Buenos Aires was Spanish for good food. However, unlike children of his age in Asia and Europe,my son had studied creative geography. When he was only 6,he drew a map of the route that he traveled to get to school, including the streets, the traffic signs and the houses that he passed.

Dissatisfied American parents forget that in this country their children are able to experiment freely with ideas; without this they will not really be able to think or to believe in themselves.

Critics of American education cannot grasp one thing:freedom. America,I think,is the only country that extends even to children the license to freely speak, write and be creative. Our public education certainly is not perfect, but it is a great deal better than any other. I think I have found the answer to my question.

  36. From the text we learn that_________.

A.both Americans and immigrants are dissatisfied with the quality of American education

B.the author shares the general idea that American education is worse than education in many other countries

C.Japanese schools in America require their American teachers to teach mathematics at Japanese levels

B.Buenos Aires must be the name of a city,as are Kabul and Karachi.

C.Children in other countries are not likely to learn creative geography.

D.The knowledge of geography of the author's son shows that American education is poor.

  答案:D

  38. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A.If children are not allowed to experiment freely with ideas they won't grow up independent and creative.

B.Most Americans think the present American educational system is not as good as it used to be.

C.Private schools run by Japanese businessmen maintain a higher level than American public schools.

D.Americans are more innovative than other people in the world.

  答案:A

  39. In the last paragraph the author says,“I have found the answer to my question.” What is the question?

A.Is Japanese education better than American education?

B.Why do Japanese businessmen send their children to Japanese-staffed schools?

C.Why was my son not taught enough geographic knowledge?

D.Is American education really worse than education in other countries?

  答案:D

  40. What would be the best title for this passage?

A.American Education and Education in Foreign countries

  B.Improvement Needed for American Education

C.Freedom to Think— Characteristic of American Education

  D.Education and Innovation in American

  答案:C
  三、完形填空

Nowadays more and more foreign enterprises and companies are no longer(41)on interviews for recruitment. Years of studying interviewing has made clear that it is not a very objective(42). Personnel officers often hire the person they like best, or even the one they think most(43)attractive. Looking good is no guarantee of doing the job well, however. Those who are ugly or less beautiful take heart.

To get a more(44)view, many companies are also using psychological tests to hire both for high and low positions.

The basic reason employers use tests is clear: tests(45)to be scientific and objective. A large body of research has shown that interviews by themselves are not very reliable as a method of selection. People' s judgment is often very subjective : whether they like the look of someone counts(46)more than almost anything else. But reliable and valid tests can offer rapid and more objective information about would-be employees. If a candidate talks well in an interview but his test results suggest that he is a(47) person who cannot concentrate, an employer is likely(48)twice about hiring him.

Taking a serious test for a job is rather different from taking a game-like test. You can spend just a little time(49)questions of that kind of test, and you deny the answers and say they are not accurate. But you cannot go to a serious test without enough preparation since you cannot afford(50)and eliminated again and again.

  五、寫作

56.Directions:You are to write in 100 ~120 words about the title "On Failure". You should base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below:

  1.失敗在生活中很常見;

  2.人們對(duì)待失敗有各種不同的態(tài)度;

  3.我對(duì)待失敗是什么態(tài)度。

  范文:

  On Failure

Failure is a common thing in our daily lives. If we don' t work hard and try our best, failure will happen. Sometimes, even when we have already worked hard and made great efforts, we just cannot get rid of failure. We can say that every one has experienced failure,, which is just in-evitable.

Attitudes towards failure differ from one to another. Some people hate failure and lose heart when they fail, as if it were the end of the world and they had no other way out. Others believe that failure is as instructive and inspiring as success. If they don' t give up and learn something from the past failure, they will make it in the end.

In my point of view, failure, just as success, is part of our life. It is true that we work hard in order to achieve success, but we should also have the capacity to learn to live with failures.

We must recognize that failure is not that bad as we thought. Just as the old saying runs, "Failure is the mother of success. " Failure will lead us to success in the end.
