With the Tesla Roadster and other plugin (插入式) electric vehicles hitting the road, demand is growing for accessible refueling points to recharge them.Carbon Day Automotive,a Chicagobased company, has now demonstrated a solarpowered recharging point, known as the Solar PlugIn Station, which lets motorists easily charge their cars using electricity that has been produced without any environmental damage.

The Solar PlugIn Station has gone on show in Chicago as part of the city’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games.According to Carbon Day Automotive, the Solar PlugIn Station on show in Chicago is part of the vital infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施) required for electric vehicles in Chicago and was the focus of a recent visit by the International Olympic Committee.

These solarpowered electricity points will be used daily to fuel the city’s electric vehicles with power from the sun.By producing the electricity from pollutionfree solar cell, the CO2 emissions are reduced to zero.

“Solar energy and electric vehicles are a partnership that is one more step to reducing our dependence on foreign oil,” says Richard Lowenthal,CEO of Coulomb Technologies.Coulomb Technologies recently developed the components (部件) required for inpidual recharging stations, marketed as ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations.Carbon Day Automotive is the Midwest distributor for the ChargePoint stations.

The Solar PlugIn Station consists of giant solar panels (電池板) that shade the tiny ChargePoint Networked Charging Station. The solar panel is connected to an underground battery pack, ready for everyday refueling.

“Without these stations it would be like driving around in a traditional car without the availability of gas stations,” says Scott Emalfarb,CEO at Carbon Day.“The day of true plugin electric vehicles will be here sooner than most people realize and the world needs to be ready to accommodate them.”

Everyone knows that taxation is necessary in a modern state:Without it,it would not be possible to pay the soldiers and policemen who protect us;nor the workers in government offices who look after our health, our food, our water, and all the other things that we cannot do for ourselves;nor the ministers and members of parliament(國會(huì)) who govern the country for us.By means of taxation,we pay for things that we need just as much as we need somewhere to live and something to eat.

But everyone knows that taxation is necessary, different people have different ideas about how taxation should be arranged.Should each person have to pay a certain amount of money to the government each year?Or should there be tax on things that people buy and sell?If the first kind of taxation is used, should everyone pay the same tax, whether he is rich or poor?If the second kind of tax is preferred, should everything be taxed equally?

In most countries,a direct tax on persons, which is called income tax, exists. It is arranged in such a way that the poorest people pay nothing, and the percentage of tax grows greater as the taxpayer’s income grows. In England, for example, the tax on the richest people goes up as high as ninetyfive percent!

But countries with direct taxation nearly always have indirect taxation too. Many things imported into the country have to pay taxes or “duties”.Of course,it is the men and women who buy these imported things in the shops who really have to pay the duties,in the form of higher prices. In some countries, too, there is a tax on things sold in the shops. If the most necessary things are taxed,a lot of money is collected, but the poor people suffer most.If unnecessary things like jewels and fur coats are taxed, less money is got but the tax is fairer,as the rich pay it.

Probably this last kind of indirect tax, together with a direct tax on incomes which is low for the poor and high for the rich,is the best arrangement.

36.The first paragraph tells us about the________.

  A.tax policies

  B.taxable items

  C.arrangement of taxation

  D.importance of taxation

37.Which of the following statements about income tax is NOT true in most countries?

  A.The poorest pay no tax.

B.The poor pay the same taxes as the rich.

C.The rich pay more taxes than the poor.D.The rich pay a very high percentage of tax.

38.People who buy imported items in the shops have to pay duties________.

  A.to the government office

  B.at a lower price

  C.as an income tax

D.in the form of higher prices

39.According to the writer,if valuable things are taxed,________.

  A.much money is collected

  B.the poor suffer a lot

  C.the rich will be happy

  D.the tax is more reasonable

  40.In the passage,the writer suggests________.

  A.two kinds of income taxes

B.the importance of indirect taxesC.the fairer income taxes

D.more than one kind of indirect taxes

The quality of drinking water in Shanghai will meet European Union standard by 2015 and,a decade later, citizens in Shanghai will drink the best water in the world.

These were the goals set by the Shanghai Water Authority. With the city’s population expected to increase only slightly and the economy to boom by 2020,Chen Yin,an official with the water authority, said Shanghai’s water consumption will not increase from its present amount.

Zhang Yue,director of the Urban Construction Division under the Ministry of Construction, said,“Shanghai is the first city in the country to publicize these ambitions. They will not be easy to achieve.”

He said water saving will help keep the sustainable development of China’s economy.

Saving one cubic meter of water means saving the city’s infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施) costs by 10,000 yuan.Last year,Shanghai saved 300 million cubic meters of water either from readjustment of industrial structure or the employment of new technology.

“The_aim is to arouse public awareness of the seriousness of water shortage,” Chen said,“The abundant surface water and amount of rain of the city are so misleading that they result in improper use of water.”

Shanghai lacks drinkable water. The Huangpu River, which supplies 80 percent of the city’s drinkable water,is nearing exhaustion.

The city, therefore, has been exploring new sources from the Yangtze River and growing forests along it to conserve quality water.

Besides penning regulations, the authority is popularizing technology among the public to efficiently cut the amount of water used.

At present, the city has 600,000 family toilets, each using 13 liters of water per flush. These are to be renovated(整修) to use only 9 liters of water per flush.

The authority is renovating the first 200 toilets for households—at a cost of 40 yuan each.

In three years, all the toilets will be renovated, which saves the city nearly 15 million yuan every year in water conservation.

Another task the city is engaged in is the treatment of sewage(污水) to improve the water environment.

At present the city can only treat 44 percent of its daily 5.04 million tons of waste water. To meet the total demand,27 more sewagetreatment factories are to be established with an estimated investment of 18 billion yuan.

41.The people in Shanghai get their daily water mainly from ________ now.

  A.underground

  B.the Yellow River

  C.the Yangtze River

  D.the Huangpu River

42.The underlined words “the aim” here refer to ________.

A.the quality of drinking water in Shanghai will meet European Union standard by 2015

B.citizens in Shanghai will drink the best water in the world by 2025

C.water saving will help keep the sustainable development of China’s economy

D.saving one cubic meter of water means saving the city’s infrastructure costs by 10,000 yuan

43.The authority is renovating the first 200 toilets for households to ________.

  A.make people’s living more convenient

  B.save drinkable fresh water

  C.ease employment pressure

D.meet the total demand of water

44.The writer wrote the passage to ________.

A.call on residents to save water in their daily life

B.seek ways to solve water shortage existing in ShanghaiC.introduce Shanghai’s advanced experience in improving the water environment

D.show that citizens in Shanghai will have the best drinking water in the world

45.In the opinion of Zhang Yue,the real meaning of the action to publicize these ambitions is to make people know ________.

A.it is not easy to achieve

B.water shortage is very serious in China

  C.the importance of improving infrastructure

D.economic development can’t be separated with water supply

  A.Birth of a Nation

Birth of a Nation was the most popular film of the silent era.The message in the film was that African Americans could never be integrated into the white society as equals.Race violence directed against African Americans took place in many cities. In the South,African Americans were only allowed to go to separate schools, hotels, and restaurants.

  B.Gone with the Wind

Gone with the Wind was the costliest and most popular film of Hollywood’s Golden Era.Producer David Selznick had promised that the film would be free of any antiNegro ideas.Although it did not use white actors in blackface, like Birth of a Nation, its picture of enslaved African Americans as loyal but scatterbrained house servants and clumsy field hands was what the white thought the black ought to be then.

  C.Glory

Glory offers a powerful retelling of the story of the first black regiment (團(tuán)) during the American Civil War.Half the regiment’s men were killed or wounded in the war,but it dramatically demonstrated the courage of African American troops in battle. However, the film failed to describe the larger historical context of the Civil War.

  D.Amistad

The Steven Spielberg’s film is about a historical event. In 1839,a group of Africans were captured and shipped to the Spanish colony of Cuba.During transshipment to nearby sugar plantations,53 slaves overpowered the crew. The captives then ordered the two men who had purchased them to navigate the ship toward Africa. At night, however, the men sailed the ship northward and westward. The case ultimately went to the Supreme Court. In 1841,the Court freed the captives.

  E.Beloved

The film is based on Margaret Garner’s story of killing her own twoyearold daughter Mary.Margaret Garner said that she had intended to kill her other children rather than see them returned to slavery. She later explained that she wanted to “end their sufferings” rather than see them returned to bondage and “murdered by piecemeal”.No other work has so powerfully examined the interior life of a former slave.

  F.Schindler’s List

The film concerns the lives of a thousand Jews during World War Ⅱ.The film shows, unforgettably, how one man does makes a difference.Schindler proves that man’s morality and humanity are always alive.“Save one life, save the world entire.”The heavy tone and fearful atmosphere of the film are heightened by blackandwhite cinematography.

China began a crackdown on plastic bags, banning production of thin bags and forbidding supermarkets and shops from handing them out free,Tuesday,June 1,2008.

Chinese people use up to 3 billion plastic bags a day and the country has to refine 5 million tons of oil every year to make plastics used for packaging, according to a report on the website of China Trade News, and fails to get rid of them properly, wasting valuable oil and littering the country, the State Council said in a notice posted on the Central Government’s Website.

“Our country consumes huge quantities of plastic bags every year. While providing convenience to consumers, they have also caused serious pollution, waste of energy and resources, because of too much use and inadequate recycling,” it said.

2.D [根據(jù)下文“He and his men immediately treated the wound”可知Dennis不忍心看到Nubs受苦。]

  3.A [由下文“Ten days later,Dennis’s unit was back”可知,Dennis的支隊(duì)不得不離開。]

  16.did [中間由but連接,所以兩句應(yīng)是對稱的,謂語動(dòng)詞應(yīng)是open,但一般為避免重復(fù),用do代替,此處用did與前面保持時(shí)態(tài)一致。]

  23.been stolen [has說明是完成時(shí)態(tài),又因?yàn)槭潜煌?,所以用has been stolen。]

  24.take [此處suggest作“建議”講,后面的that從句應(yīng)用虛擬語氣,即用should do的形式,should可省略。]

根據(jù)文章第二段第一句“The Solar PlugIn Station has gone on show in Chicago”和第二句“The Solar PlugIn Station on show is part of the vital infrastructure required for electric vehicles in Chicago”可知,芝加哥在促進(jìn)這種電動(dòng)交通工具的應(yīng)用。]

從文中第二段第四句“Each meal should have at least one food from all four main groups.”

從第三段可知A、B、C三項(xiàng)均為不良飲食習(xí)慣;由文章第二段第四、五句“Each meal should have at least one food from all four main groups. With all these food together, you will be given enough energy during the day.”

Tourism can benefit us a great deal. For one thing,it will help the city’s economy and advance the wellbeing of local people; for another,we will have nice parks, the firstclass roads and grand buildings and also we will get lots of chances to communicate with tourists from all over the world.

If tourism grows too quickly, people will move from their early jobs to those concerning tourism and local industry will suffer.Too many tourists can crowd public places and cause some pollution.

I think it is necessary to develop tourism but first of all we should have a proper plan so that tourism should be developed steadily and efficiently.

Worried about environmental issues and a severe waste of resources,China will ban the free plastic bags, but it may not be universally welcomed while they provide convenience to consumers.

I think the ban is good both for us and for the whole world, which can reduce waste and save resources. As we know, oil is nonrenewable resource.Overuse of oil will bring us a series of troubles.Overuse of plastic bags will bring us lots of diseases. So,we can not wait to stop using them. Many countries, including those with developed economy, have bitten the bullet and banned plastic bags.

But everything is twosided. For the time being, people have really got used to using them, and they do give us lots of convenience. If we forbid using plastic bags,we should find ways to solve the problem. We consumers ought to bring cloth bags or shopping baskets instead of plastic bags.
