Passage One
　　In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.
　　In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U. S. A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended (發(fā)送) only three or four days before the party date.
　　 But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world.
　　 Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently; promptness (準(zhǔn)時) is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U. S. no one would think of keeping a business friend waiting for an hour; it would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late is expected to make a short apology.

　　How we look and how we appear to others probably worries us more when are in our teens or early twenties than at any other time in our life．Few of us are content to accept ourselves as we are，and few are brave enough to ignore the trends of fashion．
　　Most fashion magazines or TV advertisements try to persuade us that we should dress in a certain way or behave in a certain manner．If we do，they tell us，we will be able to meet new people with confidence and deal with every situation confidently and without embarrassment (窘迫)．
　　Changing fashion，of course，does not apply just to dress．A barber today does not cut a boy’s hair in the same way as he used to，and girls do not make up in the same way as their mothers and grandmothers did．The advertisers show us the latest fashionable styles and we are constantly under pressure to follow the fashion in case our friends think we are odd or dull．
　　What causes fashions to change? Sometimes convenience or practical necessity(需求)or just the fancy of an influential person can establish a fashion．Take hats for example．In cold climates，early buildings were cold inside，so people wore hats indoors as well as outside．In recent times，the late President Kennedy caused a depression in the American hat industry by not wearing hats：more American men followed his example．
